"Save a Life" CPR & Defib Training

Tuesday 9th December 2025

Thank you to all those who attended this evening's Save a Life session, delivered by the Royal Life Saving Society and Leisure SK.  Sixteen members of the community took part who were keen to refresh their skills and awareness in varied items such as deliverying CPR, how to assist someone who is choking or drowning and how to use a Defibrillator.

With the aid of slides and videos, the instructor delivered an interesing course in recognising the symptoms of someone requiring CPR as well as the actions necessary in providing this lifesaving procedure.

Figures show that this is vitally important because it can triple a person's chances of survival after a sudden cardiac arrest by keeping oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and vital organs until professional help arrives. Immediate CPR intervention prevents irreversible brain damage and buys crucial time for more advanced medical treatments like defibrillation to be effective. Additionally, participants also learnt:

  1. Checking responsiveness before calling 999/112
  2. Carrying out chest compressions
  3. After 30 compressions, providing rescue breaths by tilting the patients head back, pinching the nose, and blowing for 1 second until the chest rises
  4. Continuing this procedure until a defibrillator or help arrives
  5. Plus lots more...

While the evening was of a serious nature, there were a few moments of relaxation and with a break inbetween the various subject matters, the evening passed very quickly, with everyone leaving armed with useful knowledge for the future.

Our Big Breakfast event was held yesterday and as always, proved popular with over 25 members of the community coming along and enjoying a nice hearty breakfast. big breakfast

Behind the scenes, Gill, Jane, Frances, Father Ed, Martin and Martyn ensured orders were taken, cooked and despatched with military precision while everyone else sat and had a relaxing start to the day, firstly with a cup of tea and then followed by a full English breakfast, toast, jam & marmalade, home made bread, tea, coffee and juice.

There was lots for everyone to catch-up on, causing the noise levels to rise substantially as the morning progressed, only to be reduced once the food had arrived !

The chosen chartiy to benefit from yesterdays event is Christian Aid and after all expenditure was taken into consideration, a healthy donation of £165 will be made to them at the earliest opportunity. A huge Thank you to everyone for being so generous.

Halloween Quiz

Friday 31st October 2025

The Committee would like to thank all of you who took part in this year's Halloween Quiz. 40 people took part where a complimentary drink, a Quiz, a Raffle, 3 games, Fish and Chip supper and 6 rounds of questions were enjoyed by everyone.

Your Quizmaster

Starting off, everything seemed ok and 2 quizzes in, the night was proceeding as planned. However, soon after the first game of Lucky Cards having been won by Finlay, the heckling started and contestants were finding their voices, aiming them in the direction of the Quizmaster :-)

Witham on the Hill Quiz

Another round of questions was had before the Fish & Chips restored some semblance of order and the Raffle, kindly dealt with by Jane Clark went down a treat. Several bottles of wine, a bottle of Gin and some chocolates were on offer, albeit with most (5 out of 6 I believe) winning tickets being held by one person.  These tickets were returned to the pot for someone else to win which was most gracious and eventually, all of the prizes were split between various participants.

Jackie & John

Nearly everyone took part in the second game of Heads or Tails which was also entered into the spirit of things with much enthusiasm. It went down to the wire with Kevin and John battling to take the winning spot, which eventually went to Kevin. Several rounds of questions later and the noise levels increased, the consumption of liquid that seemed to be a little stronger than orange juice was flowing freely and suddenly, it was all over. It was down to announcing the winners of the Quiz and the winner of the third game involving a £20 note.

Bob Clark

Of the six teams who took part, it was a tie for first place between "The Magnificent Eight" and "No Eye Deer". The tie-breaker question was to determine who'd take top spot which fell to "No Eye Deer".

Witham Quiz

The last item of the evening was the revealing of the last two digits of a £20 note's serial number. This game was again very well attended and Jo Plews had the honour of revealing digits 5 and 8 were guessed correctly by Jane Clark. Not only did she win the cash, she was also on the winning team and so was very happy she came along :-)

The Parish Hall Management Committee are always looking to provide events such as this with as little to no cost as possible and last night, saw us raise £151 after all expenses had been paid out. This was a fabulous result and we thank everyone for being so generous in taking part in the whole evening's entertainment. Witham Quiz

We look forward to seeing you all again next year.
